HAYLOCK, Bryan
Bryan Justin Haylock was born in Enfield, Middlesex on 9 November 1931, the younger of two sons born to Joseph Alfred Haylock (28 December 1901-1983) and his wife Kathleen Emily Eliza née Bignall (16 January 1908-2002), who married at Hendon in 1929. Bryan was educated at Enfield Grammar School and then completed his National Service in the Royal Air Force. Bryan then worked as a commercial artist for a show card and sign company designing and creating cardboard cards and signs for companies to advertise their products before working freelance, opening his own studio in Charing Cross Road in London. For several years, he designed the posters and flyers for many West End shows, something which appealed to his love of theatre including the poster for the 1971 comedy farce, 'No Sex Please, We’re British'. Bryan and Jane had married in 1961 and set up home in the village of Anstey in Hertfordshire but in 1979, Bryan decided that he needed a change of career and decided to open a bookshop and in 1981, the doors of 'The Idler' were opened at 37 High Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk, a little shop which they filled with old and new books, artists’ materials and greeting cards. Bryan continued with his passion for art and theatre throughout his second career and he and wife Jane joined the Hadleigh amateur dramatics society, and Bryan acted, produced and painted scenery for the group, as well as writing plays. Bryan was also never without a paper and pencil and with just a few strokes, he could capture someone but did not paint landscapes but it was cartoons that he was known for. He was 'Suffolk View’ cartoonist for several years from 2004 until his death and seems to have been a founder member of the Hadleigh Art Club in 2019 and exhibited his works locally including at the Hadleigh Health Centre in 2020. Bryan Justin Haylock died on 15 January 2023 being survived by his wife, Jane, his daughters, Jenny and Kate.
