MAITLAND, Antony
Antony Jasper Maitland was born at Andover, Hampshire on 17 June 1935, one of the six sons of Percy Eric Maitland (26 October 1895-22 August 1985), a senior officer in the Royal Air Force, and his wife Alison Mary née Kettlewell (15 September 1904-1999), who married at New Forest, Hampshire in 1923. Maitland studied at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol receiving his National Diploma in Design in 1957 and won a Leverhulme Travelling Scholarship, which he took up after his two years National Service in the Army, becoming 2nd Lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps. He travelled throughout Europe and to the Middle East where he worked for an architect in Beirut. Back in England his first book illustration was 'Mrs Cockle's Hat' (1961) by Philippa Pearce (22 January 1920–21 December 2006) for which he won the Kate Greenaway award in 1962 this was followed by 'James and the Roman Silver' for which he also wrote the text. His most prolific partnership was with Leon Garfield (14 July 1921–2 June 1996), he illustrated at least nine books in this sequence, he also illustrated books by Eleanor Farjeon (13 February 1881–5 June 1965), Penelope Lively (born 17 March 1933), Joan Aiken (4 September 1924–4 January 2004), Jan Mark (22 June 1943–16 January 2006) and Aidan Chambers (27 December 1934–11 May 2025). Maitland also worked in various design fields such as furniture design, graphic design, and interior design. Antony Jasper Maitland died at his home at Thorndon, Eye, Suffolk on 15 September 2025, aged 90.
