HARRAL, Alfred Cary
Alfred Cary Harral was born at Ipswich on 7 November 1814 and baptised at St Matthew's church, Ipswich on 16 March 1816, one of the several children of Thomas Harral (c1791-31 January 1853), editor of the 'Suffolk Chronicle', and his wife Frances née Williams (1786-23 November 1872), who married at St Mary-le-Tower Church Ipswich in 1812. Together with his brother Horace Downey Harral, Horace Downey Harral engraved numerous cuts for the 'Illustrated London News', the most noted being that of Harral's engraving of Robert Howlett's photograph 'Isambard Kingdom Brunel Standing Before the Launching Chains of the Great Eastern'. The July 1847 issue of 'Howill's Journal of Literature contained engravings by Alfred and he contributed engravings for several other journals. He died at Bradford, Yorkshire in 1857.
Note: his father's death is not recorded in BM@D index but is noted in the Bury & Norwich Post of 2 February 1853 when he was of Dorset Street, Portman Square, London.
