RIX, Samuel Wilton
Samuel Wilton Rix was born at Heywood Hall, near Diss, Norfolk on 15 February 1806 and baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Diss on 27 May 1808, youngest of the six sons of John Rix (1768-1807) and his wife Mary née Parker (1776-1857). At the age of 14 Rix was articled to an attorney Mr Taylor of Diss and on passing his finals in 1831 left Diss and went into partnership with Richard Bohun of Beccles, Suffolk. Samuel married at St Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth on 9 July 1833, his cousin Eliza Charlotte Shelly (13 September 1808-7 February 1872) and at the time of his marriage was a solicitor at Saltgate House in Beccles. Samuel Wilton Rix was a classical scholar and an antiquarian taking a keen interest in the history of Beccles and published several books and collected material on Beccles history. He was elected to the Town Council in 1836, became alderman and filled the office of Mayor from 1863-65. Samuel Wilton Rix died on 6 August 1894 at his death his large collection of local history was dispersed with Dr William Aldis Wright (1 August 1831–19 May 1914) purchasing much of the material and had it bound and presented the collection to Beccles Town Council. Samuel and Eliza had at nine children.
