ALPE, Stephen
Stephen Alpe was born in Bulawayo in Zimbabwe on 22 December 1959 and lived in Bulawayo. In his early teens he concentrated on pencil drawings of local wildlife but as a self-taught artist he began working with watercolour in 1986 and, being a lover of wildlife especially birds and in Zimbabwe and became inspired by artists such as David Morrison Reid Henry (14 September 1919–26 September 1977) and Chlöe Talbot-Kelly (15 July 1927-2023). On moving to the UK in 2007 he began to explore abstract and modern art from artists such as Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky[a] (4 December 1866–13 December 1944) and Joan Miró (20 April 1893–25 December 1983). He now paints original work in watercolour, which is both intriguing and eye catching, filled with cryptic clues, address contemporary issues and often challenge the viewers, straying from conventional decor preferences. His studio is in Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk.
