PASTOR, Terry
Terry A Pastor was born in Croydon, Surrey in 1946, son of Arthur Joseph Pastor (27 April 1908-6 June 1958) and his wifeDoris Evelyn née Lilley (20 February 1913-1984), who married at Hendon in 1945. From an early age, Terry was fascinated by illustrations of Dan Dare by Frank Hampson (21 December 1918–8 July 1985) in the 'Eagle comic', graphic art in the 'National Geographic' magazine and 1950s and 1960s rock. His first job at age 15 was in a commercial art studio in Fleet Street and opened his own studio in Covent Garden below the Royal Opera House in the late 60s and quickly drew in clientele. Whilst not the traditional kind of artist that employed paint and canvas for his pieces, he carved a niche for himself within the world of graphic illustration. His background in advertising and graphic illustrations led him to be attracted to that sort of image you see on the David Bowie covers but David Bowie wasn't the only musician he interacted which included Jeff Beck (24 June 1944–10 January 2023), Eric Clapton (1945-) and Rod Stewart (1945-) were also on the list of household names. He also created book covers for authors including Arthur C Clark (16 December 1917–19 March 2008), Jeffrey Archer (1940-), Len Deighton (1929-), Brian Aldiss (18 August 1925–19 August 2017) and many others. His work has been hung alongside paintings by Francis Bacon (28 October 1909–28 April 1992) and Peter Blake (1932-), and some of his pieces are in the collections of Roman Polanski, Status Quo, and the late John Peel.
Years after his famous David Bowie designs, for both the Ziggy Stardust album and 1971's Hunky Dory, his work is displayed around the world, including at a small exhibition at Number 21 Gallery, Church Hill, Reepham, Norfolk in 2016. He lived at Swanton Morley, near Dereham, Norfolk where he lived for 18 years before he moved to Long Melford, Suffolk.
