COMPENDIUM GALLERY
The Compendium Gallery was opened in a converted warehouse in Salisbury Road, Moseley, Birmingham on 1 November 1966. It was owned by Brian Hayles (1930-1978), who before he became a successful script writer for television and radio, including 'Dr Who' was a teacher and a sculptor. The Birmingham gallery was managed by Richard Beighton, former house manager at Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the opening exhibition included works by Peter Berrisford (1932-2003), Geoffrey Powell (1919-1989) and Rex Tarrant (1943-). In 1968 Hayles launched his Compendium 2 Gallery at 137 Fulham Road, South Kensington, London, again with an exhibition of the works of Peter Rex Tarrant (1943-), which opened on 23 October 1968. Suffolk artists who exhibited at the Compendium 2 Gallery include Kathleen Irene Walne and Frank Clifford Ward. Other artists who have exhibited at Compendium 2 include Peter Evans (1943-), William Archibald Redgrave (1903-1986) and Barrie Eccleston (1929-2015). The last exhibition at Compendium 2 in London was in July 1972 with the works of actor Kenneth John Warren (1929-1973) when the Birmingham gallery was sold to Alex Mann who closed the Birmingham gallery in 1976 and opened another The Old Mill at Stratford upon Avon.
