FOX, Maija
Maija Jade Fox was born in Suffolk in 1998 and grew up between the UK and Finland, between rural villages, fixing and building with hands, knowledge of land, bricks, trade, forests, lakes, and the cityscapes of East Helsinki. Maija's childhood was shaped by a rural yet nomadic lifestyle. At the age of sixteen she moved to Norwich to pursue art at City College moving between the art and construction department, pouring concrete, and playing with welding. Moving to Scotland to do her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Sculpture & Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art. Maija is now a Helsinki-based artist whose work is characterised by material-based explorations. Her sculptures and installations are created through an intricate combination of metal fabrication techniques such as metal casting. Fox often incorporates personal elements drawn from both rural and industrial contexts to illustrate the interrelationship between natural and human-made mechanisms. In addition, Maija seeks to highlight the intersections between feminist and environmental perspectives, reflecting on the identity of utilitarian objects, material processes, spirit, and function within their respective environments. She has exhibited at Kuvan Kevät the annual MFA Degree Show of the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts, Helsinki.
