SMITH, Ken

1906 - 2004

Kenneth Gordon Smith was born at Orsett, Essex on 27 March 1906, from a family of sailors, his brother was a captain on a Thames barge from where Ken gained his interest in barges and on which he painted several works. He worked as a draughtsman for the Ministry of Works in London and married at Orsett, Essex in 1934 Maisie Elizabeth Poutney (20 August 1914-7 March 1999). On the outbreak of the Second World War, they were evacuated to 3 Clifton Terrace, Merton Road, Great Malvern, Worcestershire where they were living in 1939, a civil servant, architectural assistant, with his wife Maisie Elizabeth. On his retirement they moved to Essex and then to Kessingland, Suffolk. At Kessingland he spent his time sketching churches, barges and coastal scenes around Suffolk, mostly on the East Coast. Kenneth Gordon Smith died in Suffolk on 31 on July 2004.
