Hugo Glyn

As Harold Glynn Hugo he was born at Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire in 1934, son of Percy Hugo and his wife Mary née Lees, who married at Burton on Trent. He studied at Burton-on-Trent School of Art and at Birmingham School of Art and taught in Art School for six years. He married at Bretby St Wystan, Derbyshire in 1959, Josephine Grace Banfield. As Glynn Hugo, in 1962 he set up a one-man studio in Burton, producing a complete range of domestic ware and sculptural individual pieces in stoneware, porcelain and basalt. More recently, his work has become more sculptural, although his pieces are based on the vessel form. Hugo has exhibited widely in this country and in Poland, France, Germany, USA, Japan, Italy and Hungary and his work is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Hugo had his studio at Studio Pottery, The Old Stores, The Street, Darsham, Saxmundham, Suffolk. Glynn Hugo died at his home in Darsham on the 9 July 2024.
