ABBOTT AND HOLDER
Abbott and Holder, was a partnership which was founded in 1936 when Robert Abbott, a former headmaster, and Eric Arthur Holder (1915-2007), an accountant, decided to make pictures available to all at affordable prices. The gallery occupied part of the large Victorian property at 73 Castelnau, Barnes, which had been Robert Abbott's home with the gallery in the basement and ground floor. Robert Abbott retired on health grounds in 1959 when Eric Holder purchased Robert Abbott's share of business including the gallery premises. The gallery remained in the Holder family and in 1969, Anna Holder was working in the business and Robert's nephew John Abbott (1937–2011) also worked for the gallery in the 1960s and became a partner in 1971. Eric Holder retired in 1981, and in 1987 the Gallery moved to 30 Museum Street. John Abbott retired in 2001 when Philip Lawrence Athill (1955-) became managing director and when he retired in 2021, Tom Edwards, who had joined the company in 2003 and became a director in 2012, since 2021 has been the sole owner and managing director. The gallery at 30 Museum Street, opposite the British Museum, London are still producing interesting monthly lists that even in the 21st Century have items priced below £100. Suffolk artists whose works were exhibited at Abbott and Holder include Marjorie Rider Jenkins and John Lidzey.
