Glynn VIivian Art Gallery

Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Alexandra Road, Swansea was commissioned by Richard Glynn Vivian (1835-1910) to house his collection which in 1905 Glynn Vivian offered the collection of paintings, drawings, and china to the city with an endowment of £10,000. He laid the foundation stone of the gallery in 1909 to house it but had died before its opening in 1911. Glynn Vivian's collection was eclectic but with donations, including the John Deffett Francis (1815–1901) collection of prints and drawings and the Kildare Stucley Meager (1894-1964) bequest of Swansea china and by purchases, the Gallery's holdings have become more representative of the range of European art, while remaining rich in the work of local artists. The building was extended in 1974, providing a new Main Gallery space and associated storeroom and in 2011 the gallery was subject to a £6 million refurbishment and recladding of the 1974 extension and the gallery re-opened in 2016. The gallery also presents loan exhibitions, events, and has an educational programme. Suffolk artists associated with the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery include James Henry Govier, Josef Herman and William Powell Wilkins.
