Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop

Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop and Gallery was formed when in 1967 art dealer Robert Cox (1934-2001) approached Glasgow based artist and printmaker Philip Thomas Langford Reeves (1931-2017) with the idea. With help from the Head of Printmaking at Edinburgh College of Art, Hubert Kim Kempshall (1934-), printmaker and teacher Roy Wood (1937-) and artist and printmaker Kenneth Duffy (1945-), who became the managing secretary and first director, a few weeks later the Printmakers’ Workshop was born. It was the first open access studio and workshop specifically for printmakers in Britain. The group begged a few presses and pieces of equipment and eventually attracted a grant from the Scottish Arts Council. By 1975, the group had outgrown is premises and moved to Castle Mills, 1 Dundee Street, Edinburgh above the Scottish Arts Council owned Fruitmarket Gallery. Edinburgh Printmakers provides space, expertise and support for artists to develop their practice, networks and professional experience, at various stages of their careers and the gallery shop sells original prints and design-led handmade products, by artists in residence and providing a key outlet for Scotland-based artists and printmakers. Suffolk artists who have exhibited with Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop and Gallery include Arabella Crum-Ewing and Jules George.
