HASTINGS SCHOOL OF ART
Hastings School of Art was founded around 1874 and moved into the Brassey Institute on the top two floors of the library building at 13 Claremont. The Brassey Institute of Arts and Sciences, now Hastings Library, was built between 1878 and 1880, for Thomas Brassey (1836-1918) who was raised to the peerage as Baron Brassey in 1886 and subsequently became Earl Brassey in 1911. Originally the reference library was on the ground floor with an assembly room on the first floor and space for a school of art and science provided on the upper floors. Hasting School of Art is now in The Old Bakers Rock House, Hastings. Tutors at Hastings include John Scorror O'Connor and Michael Renton (1934-2001) and artists who studied at Hastings include Anthony Gordon Dunigan who was at the school 1968-1970.
