CLARIDGE GALLERY
Claridge Gallery, 52 Brook Street, Bond Street, London, opposite Claridge's Hotel, was established in 1925 the gallery was created following the reconfiguration of a previous establishment by Ena Wertheimer (27 September 1874-24 March 1936), the muse of John Singer Sargent, 'intended to give young artists a chance to show their works without the devastating charges and commissions of the modern West End galleries'. Their opening exhibition in July 1925 was a 'memorial of the great John Singer Sargent (12 January 1856-14 April 1925), who had passed away earlier that year. It is last noted in 1931 with a one-man exhibition of the works of Philip Barnett Steegman[n] (3 March 1903-2 December 1952) and the gallery closed 'after Christmas' in 1931. Suffolk artists who exhibited at the Claridge Gallery include John Arthur Dodgson, Frances Hodgkins, Cedric Morris and Peggy Somerville.
