TUCK, William Henry

1840 - 1922

William Henry Tuck was born at Great Moulton, near Wymondham, Norfolk on 3 October 1840, eldest son of Revd William Gilbert Tuck (25 July 1810-22 April 1887) of Tostock House, Bury St Edmund’s, Suffolk, and his wife Anne Elizabeth Smyth (29 July 1814-29 March 1899), only surviving child of Edward Smyth of West Bradenham Hall, Norfolk, who married at Horningsheath [Horringer], Suffolk on 30 May 1839. William was educated at Ipswich grammar school and, on 15 February 1858, admitted pensioner at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. in 1863 proceeding M.A. in 1866. He married at St Andrew's Church, Plymouth, Devon on 29 May 1866, Jane St John Budd (14 May 1846-1899), only daughter of John Wreford Budd, MD, of Plymouth, Devon. They lived at 5 Southgate Green, Bury St Edmund’s and William exhibited at the Royal Academy from his London home at 121 Alexandra Avenue, St John’s Wood, London in 1874 a miniature portrait 'The Right Hon. H. C. E. Childers'. His wife died at Paddington, London in 1899, aged 52, when he returned to live at Tostock House, Bury St Edmund's, living with his sister and brother-in-law, being described at author/journalist. In 1911, living 'on own means', at 5 Southgate Green, Bury St Edmund's with his now widowed sister, and where William Henry Tuck died on 29 November 1922.
