GIMPEL FILS GALLERY

1946 - 2018

Gimpel Fils was founded in November 1946, briefly at 86 Duke Street, London, before moving to 50 South Molton Street and in 1972 moved to 30 Davies Street. Brothers Charles (1913-1973) and Peter Gimpel (1915-2005) and Charles’ wife Kay (1914-2009), they added 'Fils' in homage to their late father René Gimpel (1881–1945), a dealer and collector whose journal 'Diary of an Art Dealer' was published in 1966. The first exhibition, 'Five Centuries of French Painting', was based on the small part of René Gimpel's collection that had been sent to London before the Second World War. The gallery at Claridge House, 30 Davies Street, London was dedicated to its founding principle of exhibiting both modern and contemporary artists. Initially specialising in sculpture and abstract painting giving Lynn Russell Chadwick (1914-2003), Anthony Alfred Caro (1924-2013), George Peter Lanyon (1918-1964) and Alan Davie (1920-2014) their first exhibitions. Gimpel Fils also worked with some of the most important artists of their generation including Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), Yves Klein (1928–1962), Willem de Kooning (1904–1997) and Larry Rivers (1923–2002). The Gimpel family retained a strong interest in the running of the gallery with René Gimpel, son of Charles and a fourth generation of the Gimpel family to become an art dealer. The Gimpel Fils Gallery closed in 2018. Suffolk artist who exhibited with the Gimpel Fils Gallery include Frank Beanland and Geoffrey Cyril Petts Clarke.
