TOWNSEND, Arthur Louis

1848 - 1927

Arthur Louis Townsend was born at Searby Vicarage, Caistor, Lincolnshire on 5 September 1848, son of Revd Thomas Jackson Milnes Townsend (21 November 1819-31 October 1890), vicar of Searby cum Owmby, and his wife Sarah née Domenichetti, who married at North Collingham All Saints', Newark, Nottinghamshire on 4 February 1845. Arthur entered St Saviour's Grammar School for Boys on 1 September 1859, but was back at Searby in 1861. In 1871, an 'artist', lodging at Rendon Terrace, Audley Road, Ventnor, Isle of Wight sometime after which he sometimes added an 'H' into his surname and he reputably married at Newmarket, Suffolk about 1892, Marie Louise [?]. In 1901, a 52-year-old 'artist & painter', living at Roslyn Cottage, Huntingdon with a 28-year-old wife Marie Louise, born Newmarket and by 1911, as Townshend, they had moved to 37 St Mary's Terrace, Paddington Green, London, when he stated that they had been married for 18 years and had no children. Painter of sporting and rustic subjects, he exhibited at the Royal Academy also at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters 1880-1912. As Arthur Louis Townsend, he died at Lincoln in 1927, aged 79 and Marie Louise Townsend died at Portsmouth in 1949.
