STONE, Joan Moye
Joan Moye Stone was born at Southampton on 20 March 1918, daughter of Barnard Moye Stone (1873-7 August 1939), a master mariner working for Great Eastern Railway, and his wife Welsh born wife Elizabeth Ann née Davies (13 February 1878-27 February 1956) who married at Kirby-Le-Soken, Essex on 11 September 1905. In 1921, 3-year-old Joan was living with the family at Llangford, Main Road, Dovercourt, Essex 48-year-old Barnard, who was born at Kirby Cross, Essex and 43-year-old Elizabeth, who was born at Talbenny, Pembrokeshire, with children Barnard William 14, Hugh Macquarie 12, Colwyn Francis 6 and Gwendoline Helen 1, all the children except Joan were born at Brightlingsea, Essex. In 1939 her mother Elizabeth was a widow living at Talgarth, Fronks Road, Harwich, Essex with her two daughters Joan and Helen, who were both volunteers in the Womens Auxiliary Territorial Service. Joan had lived most of her life in Essex and Suffolk and, inspired to paint by artist Joan Elva Blacker (1908-1984), who was painting Joan's portrait in watercolour, she was influenced by local artist Colin Moss. Joan had a great love of the sea and ships, having traversed the Atlantic under sail, visiting the Azores and into the Mediterranean.
