TIDBURY, Mary

1862 - 1945

Mary Tidbury was born at 8 Acacia Villa, Hackney, London on 3 May 1862, daughter of Henry Tidbury (1833-21 February 1898), a wine merchant, and his wife, Ipswich born Emma née Hayward (1839-7 June 1917), who married at St Nicholas Church, Ipswich on 29 June 1858. Around 1869 the Tidbury family moved to 2-4 St Matthews Street, Ipswich and in 1871, 8-year-old Mary was living at St Matthews Street, with her parents, 37-year-old Henry, a wine & spirit merchant, born in London, and 32-year-old Emma, with four siblings, Florence Emma 11, Henry Charles 5 and Arthur William 3, all born in London, and newly born Constance L. born at Ipswich. In 1881, their private home was West View, St Edmunds Road, Ipswich where young Mary was living with her parents and siblings. Mary was a painter in oil of flowers and still life and was a member of Ipswich Fine Art Club 1883-1885 exhibiting from St Matthews, Ipswich in 1881, three works ‘Primroses’, 'A Study' and 'Chrysanthemums' and in 1882 from West View, St Edmunds Road, Ipswich 'Primroses' and in 1883 'Sunflower' and 'Poinsettia' and two drawings 'Tulips' and 'Justitia', in 1884 'A Sketch' and in 1885 'Bird's Nest' and 'A Study'. The family were still living at West View in 1891 but moved away from Ipswich and her father Henry died at 21 Weighton Road, Anerley, Surrey in 1898, aged 63 and in 1911 his widow and Mary and siblings were still living at 21 Weighton Road. In 1939, Mary Tidbury was living on private means at 129 Croydon Road, Anerley, London SE 20 and where she died on 20 February 1945, aged 82, she was unmarried.
