1927 - 1940

London Portrait Society was formed in December 1927 by a few Australian and British artists and opened their first exhibition on Monday 16 January 1928 at the New Burlington Galleries, London. A lesser-known Society which held exhibitions at the New Burlington Galleries every year from 1928 until 1940. Australian George James Coates (1869–1930) was a founder member when he exhibited some thirty works in the first exhibition, fellow countryman James Peter Quinn (1860-1941) was also a council member who returned to Australia in 1935. Their last annual exhibition was held at the New Burlington Galleries in June 1940 when Frank Owen Salisbury (1874-1962) exhibited his 'The Ecclesiastical Statesman'. An exhibitor in 1933 was Kathleen Emily Temple-Bird other members and exhibitors included John Henry Amshewitz (1882-1942), Alexander Christie (1901-1946), Frank Thomas Copnall (1870-1949), John Adrian Darley Dingle (1911-1974), Douglas Stannus Gray (1890-1959), John Arthur Machray Hay (1887–1960), Francis Edwin Hodge (1881-1949) and Marion Jones (1892-1977).
