WILLESDEN SCHOOL OF ART
Willesden School of Art began life in 1891 as Willesden Polytechnic in Kilburn, London. Some two years later classes were being held in Willesden Town Hall and by 1898 Willesden Polytechnic was formed, with around 1,600 registered students. New buildings were built at Kilburn in 1904 and in 1934 the polytechnic was divided into Willesden Polytechnic and a new Willesden College of Technology. The art school closed in 1959 and in 1978 there were around 1,400 full-time and 4,500 part-time students. In 1991 the various schools merged into the College of North West London. Alumni and staff have included Harvey Daniels (1936-2013), Ernest Heber Thompson (1891-1971), Lionel Maurice de Sausmarez (1915-1969) and Alfred Hackney (1926-1994) and Suffolk artists included Bernard Gay, David Green, Jack Savage, Frank Hillyard Swinstead and Eleanor Doris Varley.
