Anthony Raine-Barker

Anthony Raine Barker was born at Greenhill, Harrow on the Hill, Hendon on 4 September 1880, son of Henry Raine Barker (1829-23 August 1902), student at law, and his wife Caroline (Lina) Haynes, daughter of the late George Haynes, who married at Trinity Church, Frogmore, Hertfordshire on 30 July 1868. In 1881, newly born Anthony, was living at Harrow with his parents 51-year-old Henry and 36-year-old Caroline with three siblings, Francis Raine 10, Maurice Raine 7 and Esta Raine 5, they retained three indoor servants. Anthony was educated at Framlingham College, Suffolk and studied at the Royal Institute of British Architects and in 1909, won the R.I.B.A. John Soane medallion for design and the following year awarded a certificate of honourable mention in the William Tite prize. He played hockey for Middlesex. He married at St Paulinus Church, Crayford, Kent on 26 February 1916, Martha Lydia Patricia Russell (20 November 1883-), known as Patricia, youngest daughter of Thomas Russell and in 1939 Anthony was an architect and builder living at Water Mill House, Dingleden, Cranbrook, Kent with his wife. Anthony was also an artist in watercolour and an engraver and lithographer, he designed advertising posters for London Transport, 1913-1914, and later for Shell Oil, 1925. A member of the Society of Graver-Printers in Colour and the Senefelder Club he exhibited at the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery and elsewhere and he also illustrated several children's books with woodcuts including 'The Fairyland Express',1925, and 'Hidden Gold', 1926. Anthony Raine Barker died at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, Kent on 9 August 1963, aged 82 being survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. He sometimes hyphenated his surname as Raine-Barker.
