STUBBING, Emily Ellen
Emily Ellen Stubbing was born at Market Place, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire on 31 March 1867, seventh of the eight children of John Stubbing (1831-1 May 1899), a grocer, and his wife Susannah née Marsh (1827-1870) who married at Linton, Cambridgeshire in 1852. In 1881 50-year-old widowed John, a grocer employing five assistants and a boy, was living at Market Place, Bishops Stortford with seven of his children including Marianna Marsh (23 August 1863-1956), Susanna Elizabeth (4 March 1865-1946) and 14-year-old Emily Ellen. By 1901 Marianna, Susanna and Emily had taken a woollen and fancy shop at 93 High Street, Lowestoft, Suffolk and were still there in 1921 when Marianna is described as 'corsetier', Susanna, housekeeper and Emily as a 'wool and art and needlework'. Emily had exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in 1920 from 93 High Street, Lowestoft, Suffolk and in 1939 the three sisters were still unmarried and running the shop at 93 High Street, Lowestoft. Emily Ellen Stubbing died in Essex in 1946, she was unmarried.
