WINTERS, Eric

1921 - 1968

Eric Lee Winters was born at 8 Argyle Road, Tottenham, London on 21 January 1921, son of Leonard Hill Winters (7 January 1897-5 January 1971), a mason and sculptor, and his wife Olga Beatrice née Lee (9 May 1899-1970), who married at Edmonton, London in 1920 and both died at Lavenham, Suffolk. One of a generation of sculptors in the Winters’ family, learning sculpture from his father and in 1939 a junior sculptor living at 28 Pole Hill Road, Chingford, Essex with his parents. A British sculptor whose work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics and one of the founding members of the Society of Portrait Sculptors. Eric studied at St. Martins School of Art and was awarded an open scholarship to attend the Royal Academy Sculpture School in 1939 only resuming his studies after the Second World War 1947-1952. He won numerous prizes including a scholarship for a study trip to France. He specialised in portrait busts including prominent sports personalities and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1962 from Lavenham in Suffolk and fashioned the figures of St Peter and St Paul over the porch at Lavenham Church. Eric Lee Winters died at Kensington, London in 1968.
