BERESFORD, Lady Harriett
As Harriett Schutz, she was born at Gillingham Hall, near Beccles, Suffolk on 13 October 1787 and baptised at Gillingham, Norfolk, on 14 October 1787, daughter of John Bacon Schutz (1756-28 September 1790), of Gillingham Hall and his wife Elizabeth née Broadwater (1761-1 December 1847), who married at Covent Garden, Westminster on 16 June 1782. Harriet and her sister Susan Elizabeth (1784-1857), both studied under John Varley (17 August 1778–17 November 1842) after the Varley brothers had been invited to their Norfolk home by their mother in 1802. Harriet married on 22 November 1808, Lord George Thomas Beresford, G.C.H., P.C. (12 February 1781–26 October 1839), the fourth son of the Marquis of Waterford, George was an Anglo-Irish soldier, courtier and Tory politician and they had three daughters. However, the marriage failed, and she returned to live with her sister at Gillingham Hall until Susan's death in 1857. In 1997 Christie's of London sold an album of watercolours and drawings, by sisters Lady Beresford and Susan Schutz, recording a voyage to South and Central America including views on the coast of Brazil; icebergs in the South Atlantic; the Falkland Islands (11 April 1834) which sold for £2,090. A painter in watercolour, Lady Harriet Beresford died on 28 April 1860. Richard Cosway (5 November 1742–4 July 1821) made a drawing of Harriet Schutz Beresford and her daughter Elizabeth Harriet Georgina.
