CLARKE, Lester S
Lester Sidney Clarke was born at Beeston, Nottinghamshire on 23 September 1893, son of Walter Frederick Clarke (1861-1913), a silk & linen buyer, and his wife Sophy née Riggs (12 October 1861-1940), who married at Shoreditch, London in 1880. In 1911, Lester was a 17-year-old shorthand typist, living at 2 Browning Road, Manor Park, East Ham, London with his mother and five of seven surviving siblings. He served in the Royal Engineers with the Leicestershire Regiment during the First World War, and he married at West Ham, Essex in 1921 Mabel Grace Brown (2 January 1892-1984). In 1939 Lester was a 'master florist' living at 26 Hurstbourne Garden, Barking, Essex with his wife Mabel Grace. Lester was an artist of landscapes in watercolour and gouache from Holland Road, Clacton, Essex. Lester Sidney Clarke died at Bedford in July 1987.
