ROSE, Biddy

Bridget Diana Rose, daughter of Albert Edward M. Rose (1911-1974) and his wife Diana née Bennett, who married at Hampstead in 1939. Biddy, as she is known, attended community education classes with Joanna Constantinidis (1927-2000) in Chelmsford and, on Biddy moving to Suffolk, with Freda Sage of Ipswich School of Art. Biddy later took an intensive residential course on thrown form with Karen Karnes in USA, subsequently inviting Karen to Suffolk to run a similar course in UK. In 1974, together with her mother Diana Rose, Biddy became a studio potter at Milestone House Pottery, Yoxford. Biddy and Diana sold their work in Yoxford 1974-1996. Biddy married in 1983, Harry Barclay who joined the pottery alongside his profession as landscape architect. In 1996 they moved to Aldeburgh, running the pottery retail outlet ‘Avocet’ which continued until the retirement of Harry Barclay in 2017, when they closed the retail unit. Biddy continues making pottery and ceramics and is a member of the Suffolk Open Studios and sells her work from the studio at Aldringham near Aldeburgh, on open days and by appointment. Their daughter is artist Corrie Diana Barclay who was born at Ipswich in 1987.
