CLARKE, Welham
Welham Clarke was born around 1764, eldest son of John Clarke and his wife Elizabeth née Welham of Henstead, Suffolk. Like his younger brother Charles (1767-1835), a merchant seaman and, as a bachelor, he married at St Andrew's Church, Gorleston with Southtown, then in Suffolk on 27 December 1804, Susanna Plowman, a spinster of Bungay, Suffolk, daughter of John Bellamy Plowman. Welham's wife Susanna died at Ipswich on 26 October 1829 and in 1841 Welham was living in St Clement's, Fore Street, Ipswich with a 35-year-old Hannah Clarke. Prominent in local and maritime affairs and 'when not at sea a painter in watercolour'. Welham Clarke died at St Clement's Parish, Ipswich on 13 January 1848 and was buried at St Mary's Church, Henstead, Suffolk on 20 January 1848, aged 84.
