WINCUP, Donald Clive
Donald Clive Wincup was born at Carlton Colville, Suffolk in 1934, son of Albert John Wincup (6 July 1898-5 April 1952), a fisherman skipper, and his wife Mary Annie née Bradford (3 February 1900-30 August 1954), who married at Blything in 1922. After studying briefly at art college, Donald decided to follow family tradition by going to sea and joined the Merchant Navy, gaining a Master Mariner certificate. After many years traversing the oceans of the world, he developed a desire to convey atmosphere and tranquillity in his watercolours, always working to retain transparency and during his years at sea maintained his keen interest in art, exhibiting locally and abroad. After retiring from the sea, he devoted time to his watercolours, many of which depict tranquil scenes of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads being inspired by early morning and evening light, which is especially significant in the flat area of East Anglia. He married at Lothingland, Suffolk in 1953 Betty I. Belton (born 1930) and their son was Adrian Wincup. Donald Clive Wincup died at 8 Clifford Drive, Lowestoft, Suffolk on 22 December 2015.
