TOLLEMACHE, Randolph Stewart

1866 - 1923

Randolph Stewart Tollemache was born at St George, Hanover Square, London on 5 April 1866, and baptised at St James the Less, Thorndike Street, Westminster on 7 May 1866, third son of Lord Wilbraham Frederic Tollemache (4 July 1832-17 December 1904), 2nd Baron Tollemache, of Helmingham Hall, Suffolk and Peckforton Castle, Cheshire, and his first wife Emma Georgiana Stewart (6 November 1840-24 January 1869), second daughter of Randolph Stewart, 9th Earl of Galway, they married on 2 December 1858, Wilbraham married secondly on 2 October 1878, Mary Stuart Hamilton, daughter of Lord Claud Hamilton, the Tollemache's are buried in Helmingham churchyard in Suffolk. At the examinations for naval cadetships on 15 July 1879 Randolph was accepted for a cadetship on H.M.S. Britannia, a Training Ship, and later was a 2nd lieutenant on HMS Dapper, a gunboat, in Dartmouth, Devon but resigned his Royal Navy commission on 19 January 1887, when aged 20. He then studied at Herkomer's Art School and in 1924 the Medici Society published 'Fourteen Portraits after the Paintings by Randolph Stewart Tollemache R.N.'. The census taken on 31 March 1901 found him living in the Moorcroft Private Asylum, Harlington Road, Uxbridge, Hillingdon, London. The census returns states him to have been a retired naval officer and labels him and his 33 fellow inmates as 'lunatic - a person of unsound mind'. Randolph Stewart Tollemache spent the rest of his days in the Moorcroft Private Asylum, and he died at Moorcroft, Uxbridge, Middlesex on 13 May 1923, he was unmarried.
