EGAN, Anthony
Anthony Edmond Egan was born at Alverstoke, Hampshire on 26 August 1920, second child of Irish born Thomas Egan (19 October 1884-22 February 1969), a policeman, and his wife Catherine Mary née Barrett (4 April 1892-20 April 1968), who married at Edmonton, London in 1915 and in 1921 were living at 25 Wargrave Avenue, Tottenham, the home of the Barrett's with Anthony's siblings Maurice Carbery 5 and John Patrick 2, both born at Alverstoke. By 1939 they were living at 106 Mulgrave Road, Sutton, Surrey and by 1964 Anthony's parents had moved to 15 Burke Road, Ipswich when Anthony studied at Ipswich School of Art. He went on to teach at Westbourne Secondary School in Ipswich for twenty years where students described him as being a 'gifted and inspiring' teacher. He produced many well executed works, illustrating the feelings of the artist based on his perception of events which he both witnessed personally and observed through the media. He drew on influences from a wide range of subjects, notably the two Great Wars, the microcosm and macrocosm of organic cells, black holes in space and other wonders of the natural world. Anthony Edmond Egan lived at 21 Silverdale Close, Ipswich and died at Ipswich on 11 February 2003.
