BARNES, Gertrude Lilian
Gertrude Lilian Barnes was born at Eye, Suffolk on 1 January 1872, youngest of the two daughters of Henry James Barnes (30 July 1843-22 November 1901), grocer & draper, and his wife Julia Barnes (1842-10 April 1926), second daughter of Thomas Barnes of Rookery Farm, Snape, Suffolk, who married at Snape on 20 March 1866. In 1891, Gertrude was living at Castle Street, Eye with her parents, 47-year-old Harry James and 49-year-old Julia but by 1901 they had retired to ‘The Lindens’, Melton, near Woodbridge, Suffolk the year that her father Henry died. In 1911, Gertrude was living at ‘The Saunders’, Melton Road, Woodbridge with her 69-year-old widowed mother Julia and her married sister Edith Julia Dixon. As Miss L. Barnes of Eye, a member of Ipswich Art Club in 1891, but did not exhibit and as Gertrude, a member 1928-1933 and exhibited works in oils and watercolours between 1927-1933, from ‘Burnside’ Melton, near Woodbridge, Suffolk. Her works included in 1927 'June Flowers', 'May Tulips', 'Antirrhinums', 'Foxglove' and 'Aquilegia', in 1932 'The Old Oak Shelf', in 1933 an oil ‘Familiar Wildflowers’, watercolours ‘A Summer Bunch’, 'A Spring Bunch' and 'A Posy'. Gertrude Lilian Barnes died at Chilton Hill House, Newton Road, Sudbury, Suffolk on 3 December 1951, aged 79, she was unmarried. Some of her work has been conflated with American artist Gertrude Jameson Barnes (1865-1926).
