BARNARDISTON, Mildred Jane
As Mildred Jane Tyrwhite-Drake, she was born at Victoria, British Columbia on 22 November 1869, daughter of Hon. Montague William Tyrwhite-Drake (20 January 1830-19 April 1908) and his wife Joanna née Tolmie (9 May 1835-25 June 1901), who married at Inverness on 12 March 1862. Mildred married at Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire on 10 September 1902, Geoffrey Barnardiston (30 May 1868-4 March 1940) and in 1911, she was living at The Homestead, Woolverstone, near Ipswich with her 42-year-old husband, a land agent, their seven-year-old son Nathaniel Montague (16 October 1903-1986) and retained three indoor servants. A member of the Ipswich Art Club where she exhibited some twenty watercolours between 1930 and 1948 from ‘Westholme’ Cumberland Street, Woodbridge, Suffolk. The subjects were mostly of Scottish scenes including Perthshire, Invernesshire and the Orkney Islands but there were some views of in British Colombia 1931-1934 including in 1933, an oil 'The Temple Church', in 1935 two pictures of 'Loch Ranoch', in 1937 'Crofter's Cottage, North Uist' and 'Crofter's Deserted Cottage, South Uist', in 1941 she exhibited two works 'West Bay, Tarbert' and 'Outer Hebrides, Lower Loch' and in 1944 'High Loch, Stoer, Sutherland'. Her husband died at Ipswich Nursing Home on 4 March 1940, aged 71 and Mildred Jane Barnardiston died at Westholme, Woodbridge on 6 April 1961, aged 91.
