CRANE, R

fl. 1820 - 1834

R. Crane was a sporting artist who lived at Newmarket, Suffolk and was employed by the Grosvenor family. A lithograph after his painting ‘A Royal Bowman at Eaton Hall’ is dated 18 October 1832, and an engraving by Parr of the racehorse ‘Plenipotentiary’ after the original painting by this artist is recorded in Mitchell’s 'Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists' (1985) and a print of Mr John Clark of Newmarket is inscribed R. Crane, painter, H.R. Cook, engraver dated 1st Oct 1834, is at Suffolk Record Office, Bury St Edmund’s (1511/184/1). A painting ‘The Mask’, signed by Crane was being exhibited at Colnaghi in June 1986. He died young.
