George J D Bruce

George John Done Bruce was born at Kensington, London on 28 March 1930, second of the two sons of the six children of George John Gordon Bruce, 7th Lord Balfour of Burleigh (18 October 1883-4 June 1967) and his wife Violet Dorothy Evelyn née Done (1887-28 October 1976), who married at Chelsea, London on 2 June 1919. George was educated at Westminster School, London and studied at Byam Shaw School of Art, London. A portrait painter who has painted on locations in America, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, also a painter of landscapes, still life, flowers, etc., in oil and had studios in London and in Suffolk. Bruce has long been acknowledged as one of Britain’s leading traditional painters and held the office of President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters 1991-1994 also exhibiting at the Royal Academy; Messum Fine Art and elsewhere and has painted many private and official on commission. In 2003 he purchased a house in Chevington, Suffolk and married in 2007, Mrs Jeanne Cowles Fleischmann (1923-2010), widow of Peter F. Fleischmann, of New York. George John Done Bruce died peacefully at his home on 7 April 2022, aged 92. His works are held in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and many private collections.
