BROOM-LYNNE, James

1916 - 1995

James William Broom was born at Islington, London on 31 October 1916, son of James William Broom, a bookbinder, and his wife Esther née Slaughter, who married at Southwark, London in 1908 and in 1911 were living at 55 Sturgeon Road, Walworth, London. James studied at St Martin's School of Art in London where he was in the Civil Defence during the Second World War and in 1939 a commercial artist living at 22 Willow Gardens, Ruislip, Middlesex with his widowed mother. He married at St Pancras, London in 1948, Catherine Joan Redmore (10 January 1924-2014) and they had a son and three daughters. Taking the name of Broom-Lynne, sometimes under the pseudonym of James Quartermain, was a freelance graphic designer and illustrator specialising in book design, and a playwright and novelist. Art director at William Larkins Studio, London 1960-1961, Storyboard director at Service Advertising, London 1962-1966, Art director at Macdonald and Co. (publishers), London 1966-1969. He was then an art school lecturer in London 1970-1972 before coming to Ipswich where he was art lecturer at Ipswich School of Art until 1981. James William Broom-Lynne died on 1 December 1995, and his ashes were buried in St Mary's Church, East Bergholt, Suffolk.
