CARTER, Tab
Anthony B. 'Tab' Carter was born at 107 Clapgate Lane, Ipswich in 1939, son of Albert Frank Sewell Carter (21 August 1903-23 March 1978), a draughtsman, and his wife Amelia née Topple (22 August 1903-1978), who married at Ipswich in 1929. Tab, as he was known, studied at Ipswich School of Art 1955-1959 under Philip 'Pif' Fortin. A painter/draughtsman better known as 'Sewell' the cartoonist. He is noted in 'High Street Heyday' (2011) which is a history of Ipswich School of Art, where he gives some detail of his time at the school, page 95, and his studying under 'Pif' Fortin, page 38. Tony married at Deben, Suffolk in 1965, Patricia J. Beeton (born 1943) and they have a son Lucien Timothy. He first published in the 'Fitness Magazine' in 1990 and his cartoons have been published in 'Punch', 'The Oldie', 'Private Eye', 'The Spectator', 'Fortean Times', 'New Statesman', 'Erotic Review', 'The New Yorker' and elsewhere and he has illustrated various books for MacMillan. He and his family live in Ipswich.
The pseudonym for cartoonist 'Sewell' has also been given as Pamela Carter (female born 1943) but she would only have been aged twelve when first at the art school.
