SMYTH, Ethel Mabel
Ethel Mabel Smyth was born at Ipswich on 17 May 1881, fourth daughter of Robert Willam Smyth, (1854-19 January 1929), an ironmonger, and his wife Elizabeth née Clarke (1853-6 March 1909), who married at Ipswich in 1877. In 1891, Mabel was a 9-year-old, living at Dalton Road, Ipswich with her parents, 36-year-old Robert and 37-year-old Elizabeth, with three sibling sisters, Edith Olive 12, Eleanor Grace 7 and Eveline Daisy 3, all born at Ipswich. Mabel studied at the Ipswich School of Art and in February 1900 was awarded 2nd prize in the 'Model Drawing (Advanced)' class, the 1st prize was taken by Kathleen Emily Temple-Bird. Her mother died at Ipswich in 1909 and in 1911, Mabel was a 29-year-old, living with the family at South View, 3 Dalton Road, Ipswich. In 1939, she was living at 15 Bath Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk. Ethel Mabel Smyth died at Brooke House Nursing Home, Henley Road, Ipswich on 20 November 1966, she was unmarried.
