WHITE, Edith
Edith White was born at 4 Westgate Street, Cornhill, Ipswich on 4 June 1881, fourth child of John White (1846-2 December 1909), a photographer, and his wife Clare Maria née Cade (1847-17 February 1932), who was born at Ipswich and who married at Allahabad, Bengal, India on 2 April 1873, Edith's three elder siblings, May (c.1875), Arthur (c.1876) and Mary (c.1878), were all born in London. Edith studied at the Ipswich School of Art and in February 1900 she won the 1st prize in the 'Drawing Heads from the Antique' class, beating Ernest Baylis and Sylvia Packard into 2nd and 3rd places. In 1901, a 19-year-old, living at Elmroyd, Park Road, Ipswich with her parents, 53-year-old John and 53-year-old Clara, with siblings Arthur Leslie 24, a photographer, and John S. 11, who was born at Ipswich. Edith married at Ipswich in 1904, William Mayhew Birch (1870-21 December 1922). Edith Birch died at 5 Constitution Hill, Ipswich on 9 June 1977.
