HODGKISS, Joan
Joan M. Hodgkiss was born at Bolton, Lancashire in 1951, daughter of James Houghton Hodgkiss (20 November 1899-18 April 1983) and his wife Lilian née Walsh (13 August 1899-1981), who married at St James's Church, Farnworth, Lancashire on 30 August 1930. Joan trained at Bolton College of Art, Stourbridge College of Art and at the Slade School of Fine Art. Joan initially worked as a painter later moved towards printmaking and now work solely in etching and her work includes silk screen, lithographs, etchings with aquatint and watercolours. Her work is derived from the imagery of coastal landscapes, still life and natural history and she frequently uses colour in her etchings to give a subdued watercolour effect. The East Anglian coast's bleak and open quality particularly appeals to her and in her work. Joan has her studio at The Red House, Old High Road, Yoxford, Suffolk and occasionally holds print workshops and participates in Suffolk Open Studios events. Her etchings have been exhibited in the UK, Europe and the U.S.A. and are on sale in galleries in London, throughout East Anglia and now online.
