Patricia Theodorou

As Patricia V. I. Gainer, she was born at Brentford, London in 1945, daughter of Harold Gainer (1913-1998) and his wife Betty née Ledbetter (1919-2015), who married at Brentford in 1940. Her mother was a professional wildlife artist and although Pat did not share her mother's interest in painting animals, she feels she had a great advantage growing up surrounded by a variety of painting materials. During the late 1960s and the early 1970s, although her output was small, she exhibited at St Ives, Cornwall and Pat also worked as a garden designer and has written for gardening magazines and also lectured extensively through the RHS Speakers list. As Patricia Bellsham, she married at Henley, Oxfordshire in 1979, the writer Michael Theodorou and paints under the name of Pat Theodorou. Pat has worked for a gallery which sold contemporary artist's paintings and in the 1980s ran her own gallery which specialised in 18th and 19th century watercolours. In 1990, she began concentrating on her own work and as a regular visitor to Venice and Rome, Pat is drawn, not only to the vibrant life which abounds in those cities, but also the quiet backwaters of Venice. She has a passion for the pine trees of Rome and Southern Italy. Primarily concerned with colour and the expression of reflected light, Pat finds early morning light and the fading light of evening particularly attractive and strives to capture the magic of those fleeting moments. Pat paints interiors and figures in landscapes as well as straight landscapes and has also taken a strong interest in printing, etching in particular, and endeavours to pass on her enthusiasm for printing techniques. She has exhibited in London and the provinces including The Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries, London; Bath Society of Artists Exhibition at Victoria Art Gallery; Royal West of England Academy; The Burford Gallery; Sadler Street Gallery, Wells, Somerset; First-View Gallery, Stourhead, Wiltshire; Fiery Beacon Gallery, Painswick and in 2013 had a solo exhibition at Malvern Hills Gallery. Pat has lived in Oxfordshire, Herefordshire, Somerset and Gloucestershire before, together with her husband, in 2014 settled in Beccles, Suffolk. A full member of Suffolk Open Studio from her studio at Cambridge House, 19 Broad Street, Bungay, Suffolk. Her work is held in private collections worldwide.
