SINKER, Robert Carey

1898 - 1967

Robert Carey Sinker was born at Docking, Norfolk on 29 November 1898, eldest child of Revd Robert Sinker (9 January 1869-9 April 1941), sometime rector of St Matthews Church, Ipswich, and his first wife Edith Isabella Cranstoun Brenton née Carey, she was born at Gibraltar on 25 January 1872, married at Karachi, India on 14 September 1897 and died in India on 22 July 1901, aged 29, his second wife was Mabel Mary Young (1869-13 March 1949), whom he married at St George's Church, Preston on 6 October 1913. In 1911, young Robert was a 12-year-old, living at 13 St Pauls Street, Southport, Lancashire with his 42-year-old widowed father and three sibling brothers, George 10, Alick Jahleel Brenton 9, both born in India and Paul 5, born at Slough, Buckinghamshire. Robert enlisted in the army and on 31 January 1919, promoted a lieutenant, serving in the Indian Army Medical Service and promoted acting captain on 31 July 1919, serving in 1/6th Gurkha Rifles. He married at Bermondsey, London in 1934, Lily Geraldine Hoysted (25 February 1877-12 March 1967). A member of the Lake Artist Society 1933-1939 and as Captain R. C. Sinker, exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1932 from High Wells, Kendal, Westmoreland, two watercolours 'Evening Glory, Kashmir' and 'Monsoon Sunset, N.W. Frontier, India'. He studied at the London College of Divinity and in August 1838 was ordained to the curacy of St John the Evangelist, North Woolwich and in 1939 ordained priest as assistant curate at Holy Trinity Church, Hermon Hill, living at 2 Orford Road, Wanstead, London with his wife Lily. In April 1950 appointed vicar of St Paul's, Dorking where he remained until 1962. Robert Carey Sinker was of 31 West Bank, Dorking, Surrey when he died, 10 weeks after his wife, at Redhill General Hospital, Surrey on 22 May 1967, aged 68.
