TURNER, Mary Isabella

1856 - 1925

Mary Isabella Turner was born at Cotton Rectory, Stowmarket, Suffolk on 25 September 1856 and baptised at Cotton St Andrew on 25 October 1856, only child of Revd Michael Turner (1817-1 March 1903), rector of Cotton, and his wife Mary Anne Carlyon (1822-1875), daughter of Revd Philip Carlyon and Mary née Phear, Michael and Mary Anne married at St Austell, Cornwall on 7 November 1855. Mary Isabella studied at Ipswich School of Science & Art and in 1880 was awarded her certificate of excellence in freehand model drawing. In 1881, a 24-year-old, living at Cotton Rectory with her 63-year-old widowed father and her 56-year-old father's sister Isaballa. Mary married, as his third wife, at Cotton on 29 June 1890, Revd Thomas Holt Wilson (4 June 1843-5 August 1919), rector of Redgrave-cum-Botesdale, Suffolk. In 1901, Mary was a 41-year-old, living at Redgrave, Suffolk with her 57-year-old husband Thomas Holt Wilson, with their five children, Michael Carlyon 8, Amos Nelson W. 7, Algernon Charles Winstanley 5, Joyce Philippa 3 and Rachel E. H. 1, who were all born at Redgrave. Following her husbands retirement from the church in 1907 Mary followed him to Canada in 1911, planning to settle on a farm on Vancouver Island, BC but her husband died on the way, after they had stopped in Toronto to visit friends. Mary, with her children, continued to the farm in Somenos, North Cowichan, BC. Mary Isabella Wilson was of 'Polkyth', Somenos, British Columbia, Canada when she died on 18 October 1925 and was buried in the cemetery at St Mary's Anglican Church in Duncan, BC.
