LUKE, John

John W. Luke was born at co. Durham on 12 May 1944, son of John James Luke (8 August 1917-1989) and his wife Dorothy Mavis née Miller (1 December 1922-1986), who married at Shadforth, Durham on 1 August 1942. John studied at Sunderland School of Art 1960-1964 and Design at the University of Sunderland in 1990 gaining his National Diploma in Design Education. He married at Durham in 1965, June Henderson (1950-2001) and they had a son and a daughter. John taught at Hartlepool College of Art 1964-1980 and was Head of Faculty of Exp. Arts, County Durham until 2002. He is principally known for his large mining paintings but does private and business commissions both in the U.K. and in Spain. He lives at Pippin Barn West, Folly Lane, Copdock, Ipswich and works from his studio in Spain.
