John Tanton

John Edward Tanton was born at Sway, New Forest, Hampshire in 1949, son of Arthur Edward Tanton (3 June 1911-1982) and his second wife Violet Freda Monica née Sales (1 April 1926-6 November 1994), who married at New Forest in 1948, Arthur's married his first wife, Florence Mary Williams at Barnstable, Devon on 7 October 1932 and they divorced in 1947. As a child he ran free through the New Forest and riding through trees on the petrol tank of his father's old green army motorbike. He lived in a Nissen hut on Beaulieu aerodrome, sleeping in the flickering light of the Fawley flares and went to sea at the age of sixteen. John served in Royal Naval Frigates, drawing and cartooning from Mozambique to Jamaica and from Hong Kong to Bahrain and in submarines in the dark, silent, lonely depths of the Cold War. John became an art student in Devon, freelancing in design studios in Plymouth, London, and Cambridge before becoming a Member of the Chartered Society of DesignersChartered Society of Designers. His paintings and drawings take on many styles and subjects, from watercolour landscapes to acrylic abstractions. His inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere, the smallest thing can start the ball rolling, his art never stands still for very long and he is constantly looking for new ways to express himself through different images, mediums and styles and has exhibited at the Royal Academy. He moved to the quiet Suffolk countryside at Field Terrace Road, Newmarket, still drawing, painting and where he lives with his partner, Hannah Ranner.
