MASTERMAN, Julia
Julia Elaine Masterman was born in January 1972, she is married to Phillip Michael Masterman of the Bury Framing Centre. Julia studied at Norwich University of the Arts and has had a lengthy career in arts education, teaching life drawing, portraiture and working in a variety of different secondary schools. Part of her professional practice has been to curate exhibitions and organise arts events to support local artists. An artist in a variety of media including oil, mixed media, drawing and printmaking, her subject matter includes landscape, with the changing colour and light within nature are ephemeral which creates her starting point and her work on the myth of Leda and the Swan, the resulting work concentrated upon Leda but includes other female mythological characters to disrupt and provide new visualised outcomes. Working across multiple disciplines, which include sculpture, print and paint, the work appropriates known stories and artworks to interrupt and challenge the maintenance of the patriarchy. A member of the March Hare Collective and as Julia Masterman, works from Covell Close, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk. She has exhibited at Norwich University of the Arts; Ickworth House, Suffolk; Apex Gallery and The Lounge & Garden, 2 Hatter Street, Bury St Edmund's; Botswana National Museum and Art Gallery and elsewhere.
