BAKER, James
James Baker was baptised at Blythburgh, Suffolk on 13 February 1825, son of Richard Baker and his wife Maria. James married at Blythburgh in 1846, Emma née Betts (1825-1880) and had moved to Ipswich by 1861, when a sawyer living at 106 St Helen’s Street. In 1881, a timber merchant, of 4 St Peters Street, Ipswich when an exhibitor at the Ipswich Fine Art Club ‘Morning in Stoke Street’, 'View from the Promenade', 'A Misty Morning on the Orwell' and 'An Autumn Afternoon (Pond Hall, near Ipswich)' and continued to exhibit in 1882 from 4 Stevenson Road, Ipswich, 'Moonrise from Stoke Bridge' and 'Gipping Backwater' and ten pictures in 1883 ‘Village Scene, Wenhaston, Suffolk’, ‘Street Scene, Hadleigh’, ‘The Blackheath, Wenhaston, Suffolk', ‘Moonlight View from the Old Lock Gates, Ipswich’, ‘Spring in Woolverstone Park’, ‘Sunshine and Rain-Wenhaston, Suffolk’, ‘Chester Walls, from the Canal Path’, 'The Road to the Mill, Wenhaston’, ‘Moonlight View on the Orwell’ and ‘Moonlight Scene from the Promenade, Ipswich’. In 1885, from 142 Norwich Road, Ipswich, he exhibited two pictures 'Harwich, from Felixstowe' and 'The Strand, on the Orwell'. James Baker died at Ipswich on 1 August 1890 and was buried in Ipswich Cemetery on 4 August 1890, aged 65, being succeeded in his timber business by his son James Baker, jun., of 88 Princes Street, Ipswich.
