MARSHALL, David

1919 - 2007

David Ross Marshall was born at 61 Grosvenor Park, Camberwell, on 1 December 1919, son of David Marshall (21 June 1890-1973), an electrician, and his wife Maud Harriett Elizabeth née Austin (17 December 1888-25 March 1981), who married at Camberwell in 1916 and in 1921 young David was living at Camberwell with his parents 30 year old David, who was born in Scotland and 32 year old Maud, who was born in Camberwell, and a sibling sister Murial Doris (20 May 1918-17 May 2018). David was an apprentice printer compositor and grew up at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex from where he developed a passion for the seashore, the cliffs, the beach, the tidal mudflats, and the winding sea beneath the skies. When he left the coast he incorporated sand, pebbles, straw, and sawdust to recreate its textures. Summer expeditions to Suffolk took him to Shingle Street, Bawdsey and Orford with a sketching easel and paints, resulting in on the spot sketches which he later worked on in his studio. In recent times aspects of the Essex/Suffolk borders have become appealing with the landscapes of open fields and skies have been transferred to his canvas. A member of the Colchester Art Society, he exhibited from 5 The Street, Frinton-on-Sea at 'Visions of Sudbury' at St Peter's Church in 2009 an oil 'Down on the River'. David Ross Marshall died at 5 The Street, Kirby-le-Soken, Frinton-on-sea, Essex on 25 August 2007.
