ERRIDGE, Arthur Frederick

1889 - 1961

Arthur Frederick Erridge was born at Kensington, London on 29 July 1899, twin son with Albert Edward, of Thomas Erridge (1860-1917), a road sweeper, and his wife Ellen Mary Ann née Smith (1 June 1862-1947), who married at Notting Hill, London on 1 December 1886. In 1911, Arthur was an 11-year-old, living at Great Western Road, Westbourne Park, Paddington, London with his parents, 51-year-old Thomas and 48-year-old Ellen, who was born at Theberton, Suffolk, and siblings Ernest William 21, Robert George 20, Alfred James 18, Frank 14, Albert Edward 11 and Sidney Walter 7, all born at Kensington. Arthur studied at St Martin's School of Art, and was employed by James Powell Ltd., now Whitefriars Glass Ltd and worked with James Hogan (1883-1948) as a designer in stained glass and ecclesiastical furnishing 1913-1940. During the Second World War Arthur was employed as an agricultural labourer in Suffolk and afterwards designed for J. Wippell and Co., of Exeter and several of his works are in English and American churches including 'Suffer Little Children' window (1952) in St Peter's Church, Stonnall, Staffordshire in memory of William Lee (1874-1947). Erridge was also an accomplished artist in oil, tempera, and watercolour. He married at St Margaret's Church, Canterbury on 6 December 1924, Emily Annie Maud Horne (13 February 1898-24 March 1981) and had two sons and a daughter. Arthur Frederick Erridge lived at Little Cornard, Sudbury, Suffolk but was of Kemps Farm, Turkey Cock Road, Stanway, Colchester, Essex when he died at London Hospital Annexe, Brentwood, Essex on 15 September 1961.
